Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A breast lift raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening surrounding tissue — restoring a firmer, more youthful profile without necessarily adding volume.

Overview

Breast ptosis (sagging) is a natural consequence of ageing, gravity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight fluctuations. As skin loses elasticity and breast tissue descends, the breasts lose their youthful shape and the nipple-areola complex points downward. A breast lift (mastopexy) repositions the breast tissue and nipple to a higher, more aesthetic position.

The procedure removes excess skin and tightens the breast envelope. Depending on the degree of ptosis, the incision pattern ranges from a circle around the areola (least scarring) to an anchor-shaped incision (for significant sagging). The result is perkier, more youthful breasts that sit higher on the chest.

Causes

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Gravity and ageing — loss of skin elasticity
  • Significant weight loss
  • Genetics — some women have naturally less supportive breast tissue
  • Large, heavy breasts

Symptoms

  • Sagging breasts, downward-pointing nipples, stretched areolae, loss of upper breast fullness. Primarily aesthetic — can also cause skin irritation under the breast fold.

Diagnosis

  • Physical examination — grading the degree of ptosis (mild, moderate, severe)
  • Skin quality assessment
  • Discussion of expectations and whether implants should be combined

Treatment Options

Crescent lift

Minimal lift with a small incision along the upper areola. For very mild ptosis.

Periareolar lift (donut lift)

Circular incision around the areola. For mild to moderate sagging. Less visible scarring.

Vertical lift (lollipop lift)

Incisions around the areola and vertically down to the breast fold. For moderate sagging.

Anchor lift (inverted-T)

Three incisions — around areola, vertically down, and along the breast fold. For severe ptosis. Most powerful lift.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a breast lift and augmentation?

A lift reshapes and repositions existing tissue without adding volume. Augmentation adds volume with implants. They can be combined (augmentation-mastopexy).

Will a breast lift affect nipple sensation?

Temporary numbness is common. Permanent changes in sensation occur in 5-10% of patients. Preserving a tissue column beneath the nipple helps minimise this.
