Lipoma Removal
Lipomas are soft, benign fatty lumps under the skin. Our surgical excision removes them completely with minimal scarring — usually a 15-minute office procedure.
Overview
A lipoma is a slow-growing, benign tumour made of fat cells. It feels soft, doughy, and moves easily under the skin when pressed. Lipomas are harmless, but they can be unsightly or uncomfortable — especially when located on visible areas or where they press on nerves.
Surgical excision is the definitive treatment. Under local anaesthesia, a small incision is made over the lump, the lipoma is shelled out intact, and the wound is closed with fine sutures for the best cosmetic result. The procedure is quick, and patients go home immediately.
Causes
- Genetic predisposition — lipomas often run in families
- Minor trauma — may trigger growth in predisposed individuals
- Certain conditions — familial multiple lipomatosis, Madelung's disease, Gardner syndrome
Symptoms
- A soft, doughy lump under the skin
- Usually painless unless pressing on a nerve
- Slowly growing — may remain the same size for years
- Most common on the neck, shoulders, back, and arms
Diagnosis
- Physical examination — characteristic feel and mobility
- Ultrasound — confirms the fatty nature and excludes other masses
- Biopsy — only if the lump has atypical features (hard, fixed, growing rapidly)
Treatment Options
Surgical excision
Complete removal through a small incision. Definitive treatment — the lipoma doesn't recur at the same site.
Liposuction-assisted removal
For large lipomas in cosmetically sensitive areas. Smaller scar but a slightly higher recurrence chance.
Observation
Small, asymptomatic lipomas can be safely left alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a lipoma be cancerous?
A typical lipoma is benign. A rapidly growing, painful, or deep-seated lump should be evaluated. Liposarcoma (a rare cancer) can mimic a lipoma.
Will the lipoma grow back after excision?
Complete excision prevents recurrence at that site. New lipomas may develop elsewhere due to genetic predisposition.
