Umbilical Hernia

An umbilical hernia is a bulge near the navel caused by a weakness in the abdominal wall. While common in infants, adult umbilical hernias need surgical repair to prevent complications.

Overview

The umbilicus (belly button) is a natural weak point in the abdominal wall where the umbilical cord passed through during foetal development. In adults, increased abdominal pressure can cause a hernia at this site — creating a bulge that may become painful or enlarge over time.

Most infant umbilical hernias close on their own by age 4, but adult hernias never heal spontaneously. Our laparoscopic or open mesh repair secures the defect, providing a permanent solution with minimal cosmetic impact.

Causes

  • Obesity and excess abdominal fat
  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Previous abdominal surgery
  • Chronic ascites (fluid build-up in the abdomen)
  • Heavy lifting or persistent straining

Symptoms

  • Bulge at or near the belly button
  • Pain or discomfort when coughing, sneezing, or lifting
  • Redness or tenderness around the navel
  • Nausea if the hernia becomes trapped

Diagnosis

  • Physical examination — visible bulge confirmed by palpation
  • Ultrasound — measures hernia size and checks for trapped tissue
  • CT scan — recommended for obese patients or complex cases

Treatment Options

Laparoscopic mesh repair

Small incisions away from the navel, mesh placed behind the defect. Better cosmetic result.

Open mesh repair

Incision directly over the hernia. Suitable for larger defects.

Suture repair (children)

Simple stitching of the defect. Used for small paediatric hernias.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the hernia come back after surgery?

With mesh repair, recurrence rates are under 2%. Without mesh (suture only), recurrence is higher (5-10%).

Can I delay surgery for an umbilical hernia?

Small, asymptomatic hernias can be monitored. However, they tend to grow over time, and emergency surgery for strangulation carries higher risk.
